When I became sick with chronic fatigue in my 20s, I thought my body was sick. It was, but that wasn’t the source of my illness. As I discovered Ayurveda, I began to work on my diet and lifestyle, only to realize that I was peeling back just the very first layers of the proverbial onion. By healing through the vehicle of my body, I would realize so much more about my mental, emotional and spiritual patterning – patterns that led me into a life incongruent with my deepest purpose and desires. My body was simply screaming this message to me.

Breaking Through Old Patterns

We’re all born into this lifetime with deep conditioning, or what we refer to in Ayurveda and Yoga as samskarasSamskaras lead you to attract situations, people, etc. so that the patterns that keep you out of alignment with your dharma (life purpose) can be brought to the surface and released…if you do the work.

  • Are you living according to other people’s values, lifestyle or identity, only to find it limits your ability to heal and thrive?
  • Have you found yourself attracting over and over again people who trigger you in a very specific way?
  • Are you repeating the same reaction to situations, which never leads to the results you want?

These are classic ways in which your samskaras attract opportunities that can lead to breakthroughs.

How the Habits Get You to The Deeper Stuff

The essential habits of Ayurveda foster this deeper work through the vehicle of the body. By bringing your habits into alignment with the cycles of nature, you remove obstacles to your body’s innate healing intelligence. The patterns that no longer serve you are brought to consciousness. You’re given an opportunity to digest the emotional and spiritual roots of those patterns. By living in integrity with your habits, you use the vehicle of the body to live in deeper alignment in energy, mind, intuition and spirit.

Why You Need Community

In Ayurveda and Yoga, an essential ingredient for this healing process is community. By surrounding yourself with those who are more evolved along the path, or at the same place of evolution, you have a container that holds you, reflects back at you, challenges you and nurtures you as you peel back the layers. As your old, outworn patterns come into the light of consciousness, they become magnified. The ego wants to hold on to what’s familiar and you can easily get derailed by clinging to what you’ve always done simply because it’s what’s known, not because it’s what works.

To truly heal and thrive requires courage, trust and the willingness to open to connection and intimacy so that you can have breakthroughs. In the powerful words of Anais Nin:

And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.
